Here at Ireland Army Community Hospital, were joining forces with the American Cancer Society to mark the 37th Great American Smokeout on November 15.

Our Health and Wellness Center staff will have an informational table in the pharmacy area of the hospital from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Nov. 15. This booth will include resources and free kits for tobacco users, as well as information for those who want to encourage a friend to quit smoking.  I encourage everyone to stop by the table on this day to ask questions, get answers, and of course get some free information and give-aways!

Id also like to remind you that smoking, and any type of tobacco use, is one of the times in life when its OK to be a quitter. By quitting, you decrease your risk of smoking-related diseases, including lung cancer, create a healthier environment for those around you, and increase your chances to live a longer and healthier life.

The Great American Smokeout is sponsored by the American Cancer Society each year to encourage people to quit use it as a day to begin the quitting process, or quit altogether. Its up to you but however you choose to mark the day, use it to take at least baby steps toward quitting.

You may also notice staff members wearing buttons that say I love breathing. These are another way we are reminding patients and staff members to think about quitting. I understand its not easy, but it could prove to be the best thing you ever do for yourself (or a loved one, if you are encouraging them to be the quitter!)

No matter how old you are or how long youve smoked, quitting can help you live longer and be healthier. Consider using Nov. 15 to launch your personal attack against your smoking (or tobacco) addiction.
